Every summer, 13 wooded acres on Catawba Mountain in Roanoke County come alive with the sounds of children laughing, playing, and singing.
For six weeks in June and July, children staying in the Women and Children’s Center are invited to attend Day Camp at Jubilee Acres. Camp Jubilee serves up fun in a Christian setting while freeing parents to work or schedule outside appointments and interviews. Volunteer groups from area churches take turns hosting each week of camp, providing supervision, programming (including arts and crafts materials), and loads of outdoor recreation. The Rescue Mission provides lunch and snacks and transports the campers for a time to sing loud, play hard, and splash in the creek! But most important is the love of Christ the kids experience through the bonds formed with their camp leaders.
Jubilee Acres boasts hiking trails, two playgrounds, a volleyball court, a low ropes challenge course, and a welcoming lodge. Besides summer camp, the property, which was donated by Joyce Birdsall in honor of her best friend Ruth Carroll, also serves as a retreat center throughout the year for Rescue Mission program participants, shelter guests, staff and community visitors.
