Chuck and Eileen celebrated 50 years of marriage by serving dinner — and hope — at the Rescue Mission.
Most couples celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by family, gathered around an
elegant dinner, or traveling to a favorite destination.
Chuck and Eileen chose a different celebration.
They brought a cake to the Rescue Mission. Not just any cake — Chuck’s favorite mocha cake — but the cake wasn’t really the point.
It was the people.
“God brought Chuck and me together through our passion for ministry,” Eileen said. “As we talked about what would truly be special to us, we realized serving dinner together at the Rescue Mission would be exactly how we wanted to celebrate.”
The couple met during their freshman year at Southeastern Bible College in Birmingham, Alabama. Before long, their Saturdays were spent serving together at the Jimmie Hale Mission — helping with chapel services, sharing their faith, and ministering on the streets.
Serving wasn’t something they added to their marriage. It became the foundation of it. “Ministry is what brought us together,” Eileen said. “It’s the glue in our relationship.”
Five decades later, that calling remains unchanged.
As Chuck and Eileen welcomed Rescue Mission guests into the dining room, they served meals, smiled, visited, and shared slices of the mocha cake that has become part of their anniversary celebration.
Chuck encouraged each guest to slow down and savor every bite. “I take a bite, pause, and savor the flavor,” he laughed. “I couldn’t help but encourage the guests to do the same.”
But the sweetest moment of the evening wasn’t dessert.
When the couple entered the dining room, they immediately noticed the bold words displayed prominently on the wall: “To God Be the Glory.”
The phrase carries special meaning. One of the songs performed at their wedding 50 years earlier was the beloved hymn My Tribute (To God Be the Glory). Seeing those words again on such a significant day
reminded them of the purpose that has guided their marriage from the beginning — to honor Christ together.
And then something unexpected happened. As guests waited in line for dinner, they began singing
“Happy Anniversary.” Some smiled. Some clapped. Many carried everything they owned in their hands.
“We both felt so humbled,” Eileen said. “Knowing the suffering and difficult experiences so many of them face — and yet they sang through smiles. What a God gift.”
When asked the secret to 50 years of marriage, neither talked about luck or compatibility. Instead, they pointed to God’s love and shared, “The process of God blending two imperfect people as we daily receive Christ’s love and pass His love along to each other.”
As they look toward the future, their hope is beautifully simple: “To keep serving together for as long as God gives us strength.”
Every day, someone walks through our doors hoping for a fresh start. Like Chuck and Eileen, you can be part of their story. Whether you volunteer, give, or simply say “yes” to serving, your kindness becomes a reminder that God hasn’t forgotten them. Will you say yes today?
